The Summer Solstice is a special, mystical and magical time of year.
Worthy of not one, not two, but indeed THREE Art Macabre events taking place. If you’re looking for some sketching Solstice action this Saturday to celebrate Midsummer then we’ve got three different options to choose from…Take your pick!
SATURDAY 21 JUNE – here’s where you can join us to celebrate the Solstice!
1) CELTIC SPIRIT: GLOBAL CURIOSITIES @ The Book Club, Shoreditch 2-4pm
With Special Guest Tutor JAKE SPICER (head tutor of Draw Brighton and author of ‘Draw a Face in 15mins’) , the next destination on our Global Curiosities tour around the world of macabre myths and deadly festivals is ANCIENT CELT territory.
Expect to sketch the fierce Queen of Celts Boadicea and wild warriors of Celtic countries. Models costumed, with Celtic pattern bodypaint and nude shall pose for you to capture.
You can watch a TEDxTalk by Jake Spicer about his thoughts on drawing here:
It’s an inspiring watch! Come and meet Jake and enjoy an Art Macabre collaboration with him on Saturday whilst enjoying a drink at The Book Club, downstairs.
2) MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S FETE @ Royal Academy, 6.30-10pm
We’re delighted to be part of a fantastical feast of creative delights and frolics at Royal Academy, hosting a dark and twisted vision of Shakespeare’s classic shape-shifting tale of fairie queens and bare Bottoms! There’ll be 3 different sessions throughout the evening featuring a tableau of 3 models to draw. Come find us in the 19th century Life Drawing Room, as part of RA’s Summer Exhibition Late event. Enjoy Art Macabre, led by Jon, at this evening fete spectacular featuring so many other offerings such as music from former Art Macabre model Gabby Young, complimentary summer cocktails and immersive theatrical experiences. Plus the RA Summer Exhibition to explore during the special late night opening, of course!
and last but not least….
3) ALSO FESTIVAL – a festival of Ideas @ Compton Verney, Warwickshire – Saturday21 & Sunday 22 June
We’ll be taking Art Macabre to our first festival of the season as well, simultaneously, this Solstice weekend! Our friends at Salon London are putting on their first festival this weekend- called Also Festival. We can’t wait to join them to look at the theme of ‘Speed’, feed and delight our brains, our souls and our bodies this weekend. There’s a whole host of different speakers and artists involved, and we’re running both a family friendly SUPERHEROES themed workshop, on the Saturday and then an adults only Midsummer themed session on Sunday in The Bunker or by the lake outside if the elements are smiling on us.
Phew! Will you join us at any of these events? See you there!
