MEMENTO MORI: LIFE & DEATH DRAWING with ART MACABRE @ SHUFFLE FESTIVAL 2014
We were thrilled to be invited to be part of Shuffle Festival 2014, held at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. Art Macabre held a Memento Mori Life and Death Drawing themed special event outdoors amongst the beautiful trees and gravestones on Shuffle Festival’s final day (Sunday 3 August) as part of their Day of the Dead themed programme.
Ava Iscariot posed as a living monument – in her amazing bodypaint and costumed character ‘The Weeping Angel’- alongside our very much flesh and bone life model Raquel Merlot. Together they held tableau to contrast life and death, flesh and stone, and explore themes of ‘Memento Mori’ artwork and interplay with the cemetery surroundings.
The tranquillity and peace of the natural woodland and cemetery setting was inspiring and allowed for contemplation and lots of very beautiful artwork to be created across the 1.5 hour long event. There were 50 people in attendance at our sold out workshop and we hope to return to Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, and other London cemeteries, very soon for more atmospheric drawing fun.
Thanks to Kate and all at Shuffle Festival for inviting us to be part of the day, the volunteer stewards Gamze, Helen, Sharron, Jon and Dru, and models Avaand Raquel. Art direction by Nikki Shaill. Photos all by Linsay Trerise for Art Macabre (unless otherwise stated). All rights reserved (c) 2014.
